Graduate admissions committees at every tier are looking for the same signal: evidence that you can independently define a research question, pursue it with rigour, and communicate what you found and why it matters. Coursework and lab rotations rarely produce that evidence on their own.
This track is designed for 2nd–4th year undergraduates (or recent graduates) who have technical foundations but have not yet led an independent research project. Over 16–20 weeks of 1-on-1 mentorship with a tenure-track faculty member, you will design and execute a real computational research project, and build the narrative around it that makes a graduate application compelling.
The outcome is not just a project. It is a research story you can defend clearly in a statement of purpose, articulate under pressure in an interview, and support with a strong reference letter from a faculty mentor who supervised your work firsthand.
Finding a question that is original, correctly scoped, and positioned within your target domain. We work through the literature and your interests together to land on a defensible direction before any implementation begins.
Full support through data acquisition, cleaning, pipeline design, model development, and result interpretation. The standard is graduate-level rigour. Iteration, debugging, and unexpected results are part of the process; we work through them together rather than around them.
As the project develops, your mentor helps you build a clear, honest account of what you did, what you learned, and why it matters, the raw material for a compelling statement of purpose.
Background assessment and research design: reviewing your technical foundations, identifying the right domain and dataset, scoping the research question, and surveying the relevant literature before any implementation begins. If you are working toward a specific application deadline, we plan the project schedule around it from day one.
Core implementation: data pipeline, model development, iterative refinement, and ablation analysis.
Writing and positioning: producing a manuscript-quality research report, identifying a credible submission venue if the project supports it, and developing the research narrative that anchors your statement of purpose and holds up under direct questioning in any graduate interview.
Completing this track gives you three things that are genuinely hard to obtain as an undergraduate:
Manuscript submitted to a journal or conference. We suggest targeting journals or conferences for the undergraduate track. This would be a significant accomplishment for an undergraduate, and it is the most compelling type of research output to include in a graduate application. Journal submission is a goal we work toward, not a paid guarantee.
A strong reference letter. Written by a tenure-track professor at a university who supervised your project 1-on-1 over 16+ weeks. This is meaningfully different from a course instructor reference: it speaks directly to your research thinking, independence, problem-solving approach, and specific contributions to original work. Graduate programs and fellowship committees find this the most compelling type of reference a student can provide.
A research narrative you own. Through weekly mentorship, you develop a clear, honest account of your project: what question you asked, what you tried, what you found, and what it means. That account becomes the backbone of your statement of purpose, and it holds up under direct questioning in any graduate admissions interview.
