Level 3
VIP Capstone is a fully 1-on-1, assessment-based research track for students who already have strong technical foundations. This is not a class. It is a research collaboration. The program runs 16 weeks or more depending on the project scope.
This track is best for students aiming for unusually strong academic profiles, competitive scholarships, or standout research credentials that can support applications to selective STEM programs.
The student and mentor work together to identify a more original and defensible project direction.
Support extends through data cleaning, model refinement, troubleshooting, and deeper research iteration.
Mentorship builds the depth of understanding needed to speak confidently about your work in any setting: interviews, presentations, or written materials. Students write their own application materials; we help them understand their project well enough to do so compellingly.
Research setup: refining the research question, scanning relevant literature, identifying the right dataset, and agreeing on a methodology direction before implementation begins.
Core implementation: data pipeline, model development, iterative refinement, and ablation. This is the longest phase. Results rarely arrive on the first attempt, and iteration is treated as part of the process, not a setback.
Output and submission: manuscript writing, presentation preparation, and targeting the appropriate venue: local showcase, national competition, or journal submission depending on readiness and project scope.
16 weeks is the baseline. Projects with broader scope or additional submission cycles run longer, and the timeline adjusts accordingly. There is no artificial deadline that compromises output quality.
The end goal is professional-grade output rather than a generic student project. Outcomes are tiered by readiness and progress: local or regional student science showcases are the entry point, followed by national Canadian competitions such as the STEM Fellowship Big Data Challenge, and for students who are ready, submission to credible peer-reviewed journals, including BMC Bioinformatics, Computers, PLOS ONE, or relevant Frontiers journals.
Journal submission is a goal, not a paid guarantee. A well-executed, clearly scoped project is a stronger application asset than a rushed submission to a low-credibility venue. We only target journals where quality is the admission criterion.
VIP Capstone is where we can offer the most individualized and ambitious support for students who are ready to commit to a longer, more demanding process.
Upon completion of the project, students will receive an academic letter of recommendation from their mentor. This letter is issued based on over 16 weeks of in-depth research observation and serves as an authentic reflection of the student's independent topic selection, original methodology design, autonomous research decision-making, and original project outcomes. The letter can also specify practical milestones such as manuscript submissions, revisions, and competition results. It represents a highly valuable and rare first-hand authoritative endorsement of research capabilities for study abroad applications and scholarship evaluations.
